Climate Change Education and State Policy: Trends, Tensions, and Opportunities for Leadership

The Climate Change and Sustainability Education (CCSE) Committee invites you to attend this interactive session exploring emerging trends in climate change education policy at the state level and the role state leaders can play in shaping and responding to these efforts. Participants will explore how legislation is introduced, advanced, challenged, and sometimes not enacted, using contrasting approaches from Virginia (HB 1037), New Jersey (A5730), and New York (S5285C), along with additional examples from states across the country. Through structured discussion and breakout conversations, participants will analyze successes and roadblocks, including political and practical factors influencing outcomes. The session emphasizes strategies to support high-quality climate science education and respond to proposals that may raise concerns. Participants will reflect on implications for their own contexts and identify possible next steps for policy engagement.
